Bamboo

Bamboo

Porcelain Patterns - Frame 1.jpg

Bamboo is one of the most common decorative patterns found at 19th-century Chinese diaspora sites worldwide. Bamboo patterns most frequently appear on medium-sized bowls. The bamboo patterns recovered at Cangdong Village are identical to those commonly found at Chinese railroad worker sites in North America and other diaspora locations (Voss et al., 2019). Inspired by these bamboo patterns, I created three new pattern drawings. Then, I combined and rearranged these three drawings to create a remixed artwork. Bamboo is a deeply revered symbol in Chinese culture, often representing resilience, flexibility, and strength. The Chinese railroad workers embodied these same qualities of resilience and strength in the face of adversity—qualities symbolized by bamboo.

Double Happiness 囍 . 2024. Haoqing Yu.

Tableware ceramics, like double happiness, were widespread use in migrants' home village. I remixed series of my hand-drawn double happiness patterns based on the found rice bowls excavated in both Qiaoxiang and North American railroad workers' sites (Voss et al., 2019).
